I say usually because the run box does not show up in the start menu of Windows Vista by default.  So, here is how to put the Run box in the Vista start menu:

1. Click Start and then Control Panel
2. Double Click the icon that says “Taskbar and Start Menu
3. The Taskbar and start menu properties box opens up
4. Click the tab on the top that says Start Menu
5. Click the button to the left that says “Customize”
6. Scroll down until you see “Run command”
7. Click to put a check mark in the box to the left of “Run command”
8. Click OK at the bottom of the Customize box
9. Click OK at the bottom of the  Taskbar and start menu properties box
10. Click start and notice the Run command is now in the right hand coulomb of the start menu
11. Click “Run…” and you will see the run box opened up

However, and this is a big however; there is a reason Microsoft is trying to make it difficult to use the run box.  The main reason is so we don’t use “Regedit!”  The Regedit program lays out the whole registry right before us.  This makes it possible to to enter anything into our registries or delete anything from them. 

The wrong entry made or an important one deleted from our registry could spell disaster!  In other words, one little tiny mistake could made while using Regedit could cause the operating system to lock up altogether and render our computer useless until we reformat the hard drive and re-install an operating system on it.

The bottom line is don’t fool around with Regedit.  there is no reason to.  There may be a reason why a Microsoft Certified Engineer might want to play around in Regedit but there is no reason we should.  Anything you can do in Regedit you can do in the Control Panel; like put the run command in the start menu, for instance.  Or, change screen colors and users, etc.

If there is something wrong with the registry, just use a registry cleaner, that’s all.   A registry cleaner will take care of any registry problem you may have and it will keep your PC fast and free of errors and crashes.

I’ve tried running other OS’s, namely Linux, but for me, it just wasn’t worth it.  The advantages to Windows far outweigh the disadvantage that I may have to deal with a slowdown now and then.  So, I happily use My Windows operating system and prepare myself for the challenge of keeping it running at top speed.

There are little things you can do to make sure your Windows Vista or XP keeps humming along.  First, when I install a new software package of any kind, I read the small print during the installation process.  Usually, as it installs, the Windows installer will ask you if you want the program to start upon start-up.  In  other words, any time you start the computer.  You should say no to this question.  Why have a program running all the time and stealing your computer’s resources when you can start any program any time you need it by going to the start menu?

Also, make sure you have enough RAM on board and make sure your virus scanner is up to date.  However, the important thing to know about Windows operating systems is their registries become corrupted over time.  This is a more common phenomenon with With Windows XP and Vista than it was with earlier versions of Windows.  Also, there are more ways a registry can become corrupt than there were even just a few years ago.

Knowing all the ways which a registry becomes corrupt is not the important thing.  Understanding that you must keep your registry from accumulating corruption is very important.  It is also important to know registry corruption slows computer processing down significantly and if corruption is let to accumulate over time it will cause errors and crashes.  Registry corruption starts by slowing down your PC.  It could, if let to run wild, ruin your operating system!

The only antidote is running a good registry cleaner from time to time.  This is the only way to guard against registry corruption and it is by far and away the best way to remove corruption that has already accumulated in the registry.  Remember, this comes from a computer technician.  I used to have to remove registry corruption manually before registry cleaners were available.  Believe me, using a registry cleaner is much easier and about a thousand times quicker!

Sometimes you will find a registry cleaner that gives you no indication of which OS’s their program is designed for.  Actually, this is good.  These registry cleaners can take care of just about all registries.  If they can’t service the your operating system’s registry a popup message will tell you soon as soon as you start your initial free scan.  This would be unusual though because advanced software such as this will be able to clean all but the most unusual registries.

For instance, I am running Windows Vista on a 64 bit system.  A 64 bit system is not very common and a lot of registry cleaners, even the some of the most popular ones stipulate they will clean Windows Vista 32 bit systems.  Not stipulating 64 bit means they are
unable to work on that registry.

In any event, I wanted to try out and review a new registry cleaner that had made no indication on their page of which registries their product did or did not work on.  So, I tried it with my 64 bit system and it worked beautifully!  So, impressed was I with its performance, the company behind it and  its extra features, I have made it my most highly recommended registry cleaner!

As far as Windows XP registry cleaners go.  I don’t believe there are any programs around today that are not compatible with Windows XP.  Let’s face it; if they were not upgraded to XP ready yet, they would be so far behind the times they could not possibly have survived until now.

Yes, there still are some programs around not yet ready for Vista, but I no of none not ready for XP.  Most registry cleaners are compatible with both XP and Windows Vista.

Windows XP ad Vista registries are made up of 5 sections, which can think of as main folders, called hives.  These main folders are loaded with instructions the OS goes through sort of like a Saturday morning grocery shopper goes through a shopping list.  When some of the files carry instruction sets that are useless or inaccurate, it is said that the operating system has registry corruption.

Knowing what you know now about Windows registries, you can see how a corrupt registry could make a computer slow down as it runs inaccurate instructions and looks for information that is not in the registry at all.  You can also see how registry corruption can cause errors and crashes.
