My computer is running slow.  I have heard this probably a thousand times.  You see, I run  a computer repair shop.  Everyday, at least once, I will get a call from someone who after saying hello will state, “My computer is running slow.”   

A slow running computer is such a common problem I make it a point to try to help these customers, or potential customers get their computers running at top speed again without making them bring it to me.  It the computer hasn’t become a non-functionally slow computer, I give these callers a tip before I tell them it is necessary to bring their PC to my shop.

The tip I give them is their computer may be suffering from corruption in the Windows operating system’s registry.  First, I have to find out if they have a good virus cleaner installed on their computer and if it has been updating regularly.  Some people truly won’t know this and I may not always be able to help these folks over the phone.

Most people do have a virus cleaner installed since most computers come with one already installed.  I also, have to ask them which virus cleaner it is.  Sometimes a new virus is out and some of the cleaners are not detecting it yet.  Usually, I would know this and this could be the problem.  Another thing is, some virus cleaners are just virus cleaners and spyware could sneak by them undetected.  For this reason, sometimes it is necessary to have both a virus cleaner and a spyware cleaner installed on a computer because any virus or spyware can slow down a computer.  Some of these parasites could slow down a PC a great deal.

After asking a few of these questions and being relatively sure the computer is not infested with a virus or spyware, and if it sounds like the computer is capable of running a software program, even if it does so slowly, I will suggest running a registry cleaner.

There are several things that will make a computer run slower, sometimes, much, much slower.  However, if it is a reasonable guess there is no virus or spyware on a computer that has become slow, it very often is corruption in the registry making the computer’s operating system need to work very hard to get very little done. 

When a  caller seems to be a victim of registry corruption, I will give them a website address where they can go to get a free scan.  If it turns out their registry is corrupt they can pay about $30-40 to clean the registry all they want for a year.  It has been my experience this helps just about all these types of callers to get their computers running fast again for a lot less than they would have to pay for my services.
