Some PC Gaming Terms Explained

Those who are new to the world of PC gaming will probably find some of the terms that are used quite confusing. Retro 2

Graphics Processing Unit (CPU)~Graphics Processing Unit (CPU)~Graphics Processing Unit (CPU). The graphics processing unit is the chip on a gaming card where the images are produced. Your CPU determines how good the images that you see are.

Texture Mapping. You are almost certain to have observed texture mapping but you may not have known what it was called. This is the ability to make an object look 3D; something that is important for those modern games we enjoy. Not a lot of computer processing power is required for this but a bitmap image can produce very convincing images.

Frame Rate. The frame rate actually refers to how fast images will appear on your screen and this helps to create an illusion of movement in a game. Sixty frames per second is the normal amount for a really good quality game these days. If the frame rate is any lower than 30 frames per second it will start to look clunky.

Artifact. Sometimes during a game, you will see something appear on your screen which should not be there and this is called an artifact. When a CPU cannot cope with the demands being put on it, these artifacts will appear. It could also be a sign that there is something else slowing your computer down; for example a virus or a problem with your drivers.

Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP)~Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP)~Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP). Older computers used an APG in order for the graphics card to be connected and these allowed PC games to be played. The computer that you are using might have an APG although most computers do not come with this anymore.
